Sedation is a technique that uses medication to produce a calming and relaxed effect over your central nervous system. These medications come in many forms and are administered in several different ways. Today it is common for dentists to use Sedation Dentistry for all types of anxiety. Sedation is an ideal solution for patients who suffer from dental phobias. Equally it is successful in patients who have trouble controlling their movements like involuntary gagging. The great news is Sedation Dentistry is suitable for both adults and children alike and enables you to receive the dental care you require; easily, quickly and comfortably.
Before your Sedation Dentistry treatment, the doctor will thoroughly review your medical history and discuss with you in detail your treatment. Dr. Choudhury and Dr. Payumo are certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and a member of our team will stay by your side throughout the procedure.
The technique of Oral Sedation begins about an hour prior to your dental appointment. A sedative pill is administered to the patient and after a short period of time you will then become very relaxed. Dependent on your needs your Oral Sedation can last between 2 and 6 hours. To ensure your safety, please organize a companion to bring and take you from the practice. As oral sedatives are not pain relievers, a local anesthetic will also be used.
Intravenous (I.V.) Sedation is the administration of tranquilizer medication into a patient’s vein. Compatible for the majority of patients, I.V. Sedation enables even the most anxious of people to undergo dental treatment. The sedatives administered, create strong feelings of relaxation and comfort. During your dental treatment you will not experience any pain or discomfort. When you have awoken after the procedure, you will have no memory of the treatment. As with Oral Sedation, a local anesthetic will be used for pain relief.
